Historically, in Northern Ireland the Department for Regional Development (DRD) had produced household projections for Northern Ireland. However, household projections for Northern Ireland have not to date been produced on a regular basis. Working in partnership with DRD, NISRA has produced new household projections based on the 2002 population projections, which will contribute to the assessment of future housing demand in Northern Ireland.
This presentation outlined the methodology of how the new Northern Ireland household projections were produced. It discussed the issues that were faced, methods used in other countries and the results of the model.
The demographic based projections will contribute to the assessment of future housing demand in Northern Ireland. However, further work was undertaken by a number of agencies in Northern Ireland to produce estimates of future housing need, taking account of vacant dwellings, housing stock loss and other factors. For anyone interested in the final report, copies can be obtained on the NISRA website.
