Westminster Parliamentary Constituency Population Estimates

1 February 2008

We have produced yearly population estimates for the 59 Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies (WPCs) in Scotland for the period 30 June 2001 to 30 June 2006. These population estimates are broken down by sex and five year age group.

Populations for WPCs are based on datazone population estimates where each datazone has been assigned to a particular WPC. Where a datazone crossed the boundaries of two (or more) WPCs it was assigned to the WPC containing the majority of the population.

Using Non-Standard Geographies data compiled from the 2001 Census to quality assure the data, it has been shown that this method provides a good estimate for 57 (out of 59) WPCs. The estimates for the remaining 2 WPCs (Glasgow North West & Glasgow North) have been adjusted to account for a boundary problem.

The Evaluation of Non Standard Geography Population Estimates report gives further information on the data used in our quality assurance process.

These estimates may be subject to revision, as we are working on improving the population estimation process.
