4. Population comparisons with 2000-based projections

Some comments on the differences between the assumptions used in preparing these latest projections and the previous, 2000-based, sub-national projections were given in Section 2.

For Scotland, the latest 2002-based projections are lower compared with the 2000-based projections, they are lower in all the following years up to 2018. This is due mainly to the change in the population base after the results of the 2001 Census (see Revised Mid-year Population Estimates 1982-2000 for more details) and changes to the underlying assumptions mentioned earlier. Any more detailed comparisons at the subnational level are distorted due to these changes in the population base, and so no further comment is provided.
