Modelling Census Under-Enumeration - A Logistic Regression Perspective

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation

Deprivation data was obtained from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) developed by the Social Disadvantage Research Centre, at Oxford University, and commissioned by the Scottish Executive (for the full report see Noble et al, 2003). The SIMD measures the different aspects of deprivation with the view of combining them into a local index. It presents individual or household levels of deprivation in the form of an aggregate score for each ward in Scotland. The fundamental assumption is that individuals and families experiencing deprivation would cluster together in the same geographical location.

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation seeks to answer two questions:

1.

How far do deprived individuals geographically cluster together?

2.

How are other non-deprived individuals affected by the deprivation?

The advantage of the SIMD is that it recognises the different dimensions of deprivation and provides a measure of the concentration of deprivation (independent of population size).
