The analysis of the factors that affect under-enumeration is given in Section 2 onwards. The remaining part of this section gives a description of the Census variables used presenting results from the 2001 Census.
As previously stated, under-enumeration is a resultant of a wide-ranging variety of factors. The SIMD data provided some deprivation, social and economic attributes which could be analysed to ascertain how associated they were with under-enumeration. The rest were obtained from the Census database, available over the internet through the Scottish Census Results OnLine (SCROL) website.
The Census results provided the demographic and household variables used in analyses. It is imperative to realise that the variables chosen from the Census are by no means exhaustive. It is very feasible that some variables not considered will be found to be predictive of whether or not an area is under-enumerated.
