Figure 1.2.1 (19 Kb PDF file) shows the distribution of the age structure in each local authority area shows that in general there is an ageing population. The major cities – Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen – have a high percentage of 20-24 year olds; this is perhaps because of people in university or on graduate schemes. Eilean Siar, Angus and Highland - areas with few or no higher educational institutions - have a lower proportion of 20-24 year olds. In Scotland as a whole there are migration peaks for males and females in their late teens and early twenties. Furthermore, the 2003 Registrar General’s Annual Report showed a marked net migration gain at ages 19 and 20, and net migration loss at ages 23 and 24. These patterns are consistent with an influx of students from the rest of the UK (and overseas) starting higher education, followed by a further move after graduation.
