Recent Migration into Scotland: The Evidence Base
The National Institute of Social and Economic Research recently produced this review which was commissioned by the Scottish Government. It uses evidence from a range of published and unpublished sources, including datasets, surveys and qualitative studies, across the two main areas of economic and employment impacts and social impacts.
Local Area Migration Indicators
The Office for National Statistics has created this compilation of data related to migration.
National Insurance Number (NINo) tabulation tool
The Department for Work and Pensions’ tabulation tool provides details of the numbers of national insurance number allocations to adult overseas nationals entering the UK.
Worker Registration Scheme
Individuals from the A8 countries (i.e. those that joined the European Union (EU) in May 2004, excluding Cyprus and Malta) are required to register under the Worker Registration Scheme if they work as employees. The Home Office publish some data on the number of these migrants in their 'Control of Immigration' publication (http://rds.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/immigration-asylum-stats.html). The Accession Monitoring reports have now been discontinued but further information on A8 migrants can be obtained by making a Freedom of Information request to the UK Border Agency (Freedom.Informationteam@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk)

The GROS Vital Events Reference Tables include details of the country of birth of mothers.
Population by Country of Birth and Nationality
The Annual Population Survey (APS) has been used to estimate the population by country of birth and nationality.
