The number of marriages in Scotland has increased in the second quarter of 2010 after five consecutive falls, provisional figures show.

The Registrar General for Scotland today published provisional figures for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered during the second quarter of 2010.

The figures show:

  • marriages were up by 411 from 7,877 to 8,288.
  • 127 civil partnerships (53 male and 74 female) were registered in the quarter, 18 fewer than the second quarter of 2009.
  • 14,743 births were registered in the second quarter of the year – 123 fewer than in the same period of 2009. Taking the first two quarters of the year together, the number of births is very slightly higher than in the first six months of 2009.
  • 12,812 deaths were registered in Scotland in the second quarter of 2010 - 42 more than in the same period of 2009.
  • Deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke fell by 4.6 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively. Deaths from cancer rose by 2.3 per cent.

Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan Macniven, said:

“Today’s figures show a rare increase in the number of marriages in Scotland, although marriage rates fluctuate through the year and quarterly data can’t be taken as indicative of the year ahead.”
