Births, Marriages and Deaths – Third Quarter 2010

The Registrar General for Scotland today published provisional figures for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered during the third quarter of 2010.

The figures show:

  • 14,910 births were registered in the third quarter of the year – 348 fewer than in the same period of 2009. Taking the first three quarters together, the number of births is nearly 1% lower than in the first nine months of 2009 and nearly 3% lower than in the first nine months of 2008. 
      
  • marriages were up by 326 from 11,251 to 11,577.
     
  • 171 civil partnerships (72 male and 99 female) were registered in the quarter, 21 fewer than the third quarter of 2009.
     
  • 12,506 deaths were registered in Scotland in the third quarter of 2010 – 0.6% more than in the same period of 2009.
     
  • Deaths from stroke fell by 5.7%, while deaths from coronary heart disease stayed the same. Deaths from cancer rose by 2.9%.

Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan Macniven, said:

“Today’s figures show that the number of deaths in the first 9 months of 2010 have remained almost the same as in the period January to September 2009 – which had the lowest number of deaths and lowest death rate in the period January to September for at least three decades.”
