Geography

Welcome to the National Records of Scotland (NRS) Geography web pages. Here you will find information about who we are, the services and products we provide and how to contact us. We want our geography section to be as helpful as possible but if you think there are things that should be added or changed please contact us with your suggestions.

We hold a large amount of geographically referenced information about Scotland’s population. Our digital products and related indexes allow information from different sources to be mapped and compared for a wide variety of purposes. For example our postcode geography allocates addresses to small areas which can build up flexibly into larger areas for analysis or comparison.

Statistics are published for administrative, health, electoral and other geographic areas. Many of these geographic areas have been established by statute and have been amended over time. Unfortunately many do not align with each other which makes it difficult to compare statistics between geographies and over time. Our geographic products can help with the comparison of statistics.
