Help Researching Scottish Ancestors
How can the records held by the General Register Office for Scotland help me research my Scottish ancestors?
-
Visit New Register House and search the records in person (
leaflet S3).
- If you have sufficient identifying information we can search for a particular event on your behalf (leaflet S2). You will need to apply by post or fax; email application is not yet possible. Please download, print and complete the appropriate form for your search:
Form SU3 if you are applying for an extract from the statutory birth, death and marriage registers or the Old Parish Registers.
- Form SU9 if you are applying for an extract from the 1841 to 1901 census records.
- You can visit the ScotlandsPeople website which contains around 100 million index entries to birth, death, marriage and census records. It also contains digital images of most of these records, which you can access through the index entries.
