Schools Census Project

What is it, who is involved and why

The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS), in conjunction with Learning  Teaching Scotland (LTS), local authority education departments and others are to develop an innovative education project for use in upper primary and secondary schools engaging with their local communities. The aim is to build on our previous project in 2006 by developing an education project to be offered to support the Curriculum for Excellence in Scottish schools and exploit the potential of Glow, the national schools intranet.

What does it mean for schools and teachers

The Census provides a creative context for teaching and learning within the social subjects, in numeracy, ICT and in cross-curricular working such as education for citizenship. The project to be developed should provide a concrete basis for practical trialling of several aspects of Curriculum for ExcellenceA part time Development Officer will be seconded from the education sector for 1 year to develop the project.

When

The aim will be to pilot the project in the areas selected for the 2009 Census rehearsal and roll it out nationally by 2011.

Background information and resources - including 2011 Census preparations, the 2001 Census and earlier censuses - are available on our census homepage.

2001 Census statistics are available free on Scotlands Census Results Online (SCROL).
