Preparations

The census is a big and complex task. The National Records of Scotland (NRS), formerly the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS), undertook an extensive research and consultation programme to make sure that people understood the questions and that the questionnaire delivery and processing arrangements worked.

Consultation and Research
Our extensive consultation programme continues with the focus now on the statistical outputs from the census. Outputs are an assortment of census products that are designed to meet a wide range of census data user needs. The 2001 Census tabular outputs can be accessed on the SCROL website. We invited users to get involved and help shape the main statistical outputs and specialist products that will be produced from the 2011 Census. You can also find out about the extensive work we have already done to ensure the 2011 Census asked the questions that will support our future public services.

2009 Census Rehearsal
GROS rehearsed its approach to the 2011 Census by delivering questionnaires to around 50,000 households in west Edinburgh and Lewis and Harris in time for census rehearsal day, on Sunday 29 March 2009.

2006 Census Test
GROS tested its initial plans for the 2011 Census in the 2006 census test.
