2001 Census

The supply of all Census material in electronic format will be subject to end user licenses which grant unrestricted use of the material but with conditions that require:

 

• The acknowledgement of © Crown copyright and source;
• That the user shall not attempt to derive information about identifiable individuals nor purport to have done so; and
• That the user shall obtain a license to cover re-use and publication.

Any re-use and publication of any of the statistics in the Census products must be covered by a free 'click-use' license obtained from HMSO as controller of Crown copyright. The definition of 're-use and publication' is comprehensive and includes use on an intranet and any form of publication to a third party. An organisation may be covered by a single license which applies for a period of five years. Re-use and publication of other material must be covered by specially tailored licenses.

Organisations may use the 2001 Census output to create value added products and supply these to third parties under either a click-use license or a distribution license which additionally allows sub-licensing of re-use and publication, both for non-commercial and commercial purposes. There are also a number of organisations which currently supply value added products based on the 1991 Census, particularly for applications in marketing and other commercial activity.
