Origin-destination Travel Data on NOMIS Website

18 December 2007

2001 Census data for the UK on travel flows, previously only available on CD and requiring specialist software to use, can now be viewed and downloaded free of charge from the NOMIS Official Labour Market Statistics website.

The data is provided in tables that show daily flows of workers (and students in Scotland) from residence to place of work/study for all local authority areas in Great Britain and parliamentary constituency areas in Northern Ireland.

The tables are a subset of the origin-destination data and include breakdowns of the characteristics of the people in the flows. The information which is available is from the following local authority level origin-destination tables:

  • W101-W107 for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • TV101-TV107 for Scotland, but only data for those aged 16-74 who are in employment. The remaining Scottish travel data, covering those not aged 16-74 and those aged 16-74 who are not in employment, will be put onto the NOMIS website at a later date.

A description of the local authority level origin-destination statistics can be found on the Origin Destination Statistics: Local Authorities page of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website.

The inclusion of these tables on the NOMIS Official Labour Market Statistics website enables easier and greater access to 2001 Census travel data for the specialist and more general user alike. If you have not used NOMIS before, access to the data is available by clicking on either the “Wizard query” or the “Advanced query” options that appear on the home page and then clicking on “2001 Census – SWS/STS UK travel flows (local authority)”. The Wizard query will assist you in choosing the geographic areas and data topics you require.
