It is possible to confirm that in 80 percent of cases an assignment to ‘Other ethnic group’ was correct. In 6 percent of cases, it looks as though an assignment to ‘Any Mixed background’ would have been more appropriate in that one of the following applied:

• an entry was made in Section B;

• the text entered included references to the ethnicity of the person’s father or mother or earlier antecedents that indicated mixed ethnicity; and

• the text entered indicated a mixed ethnic background in some other way.

In most of the remaining cases (14 percent of all cases), it is impossible to confirm the assignment because the form-filler either did not complete the question or no form was received for the person and the record was created as part of the One Number Census process.
