The question on ethnicity on the form for the 2001 Census divided answer categories into five sections. Form-fillers were asked, first, to select a section and, second, to tick a box within that section. For one tick box in each section the form-filler had also to write some descriptive text. There were 14 tick boxes in all.
There was also the same number of categories in one of the main classifications of ethnicity used in output from the Census. In general, each output category corresponded to a tick box on the form in that, in the main, a person with a tick in a box would be assigned to the corresponding output category. The main exceptions to this general rule were the output categories of 'Any Mixed background' and 'Other ethnic group'.
